Legal Schnauzer Roger Shuler Given "Mystery" Pills at Shelby County Jail Without Having a Medical Visit

This is Carol, Roger's wife. Legal Schnauzer publisher Roger Shuler was denied proper treatment recently for a simple medical problem while unlawfully incarcerated in the Shelby County Jail. Shuler noticed allergy symptoms after a recent trip to the Jefferson County Courthouse for a hearing in the Jessica Medeiros Garrison case. Shuler wound up with a nurse at the jail trying to give him the wrong pill that had been prescribed without a visit to the medical office.

After noticing the onset of symptoms, Shuler filled out a sick call form, which includes a $5.00 charge that supposedly is for a visit to the medical office. On his form, Shuler requested an antihistamine for allergy symptoms and ibuprofen for achiness. But he was never seen by a member of the nursing staff and wound up being given a "mystery pill" that he had not asked for.

"The nurse tried to give me two yellowish pills here in my unit and I did not recognize what they were," Shuler said. "She told me they were a decongestant called CPM. I told her a nurse had never seen me in the office and that I had not requested a decongestant, that I needed an antihistamine. I told her I was not going to take a pill that I didn't even know what it was and she shrugged her shoulders as if to say she didn't care one way or another.

"In my discussions here at the jail, it seems to be a common problem for inmates to be given pills that were not properly prescribed and often they do not even know what the pills are. In my case, my problem finally is resolving but I spent three or four days under the weather for a problem that should have been resolved in a few hours time. I can see instances where inmates take pills that are improperly prescribed and make their health issues worse.

Allergies are one of the most common medical problems in America and there are many simple, inexpensive over-the-counter medications for treating them. If the Shelby County Jail can't deal with a problem as simple as a mild allergy, I wonder if they should be housing humans here anyway. I feel like my health has been jeopardized by the lack of medical care here and that's particularly alarming considering that I should not lawfully even be in here. Multiple experts told the New York Times my incarceration is unconstitutional without question and this is just one of the issues that happens when you allow people like Rob Riley to play political games with our justice system."

OK let me get this straight:
1. First and Fourth Amendments rights violated.
2. Arrested without a warrant.
3. Civil case turned into a criminal case.
4. A process server might have violated jail policy and state law.
5. Police brutality and excessive force.
6. False arrest.
7. And now charging him $5 to see a medical person.

How much do you think it costs keeping him locked up at tax payer expense for no reason at all. I hope when he does get out he files a lawsuit against Riley and all involved.

Anon @ 11:45 AM -- Oh you can count on it! And Riley and everyone else involved in this farce had better pray that no further harm comes to Roger while he is being unlawfully incarcerated. They really will have serious problems then. As in stripped clean of everything and hopefully in prison themselves!

of course it is expensive to keep Mr. Shuler in jail. However, for those who want him in jail, money isn't an object, especially if it isn't their's.

Even if Mr Shuler was guilty of something, non violent offenders are best kept out of jail and given "house arrest". we have it in British Columbia and it works well. people are simply confined to their homes, with an ankle braclet. Saves the government money. In cases where the person is employed they are permitted to go to work and back, so their families don't have to go on welfare. its a win, win.

Mr. Shuler is in jail for political reasons. He will stay there at least until the elections are over, or so I suspect.

Is anyone running against Luther Strange yet?

russia today appears to be telling the US about the violations, such as GITMO shut down and it is a very big deal with russia today about the freedom of speech and the journalist not harmed.

they get lots of criticism for the 'abuses' that Roger is suffering.

the drugs in so called pill form are all unknown science, and that is the reality of the system called p harm aceuticals. Roger is better off letting his own immune system fight off the many intentional 'infecting bugs / diseases'.

i'd file papers every day, Carol, in this case. The paper trail would be the Motion to Move the Court in the Case of Roger Shuler and PROTECTIVE ORDER, for the following:

every nano in the jail time goes into motion upon motion

Next time he should accept the pill and keep it.

Anon @ 7:09 AM -- He can't accept the pill & keep it. He has to swallow it right then in front of the nurse. They don't let inmates hold onto medications.

FYI, cpm is an antihistamine. look up clorphenamine, or chlopheniramine maleate (the version he was probably offered). The are some combi drug formulations that include decongestant, but plain old CPM is an antihistamine.

Sarah -- Yes, I did google it as I was putting this post together & discovered that the medicine given to Roger was indeed likely an anthihistamine. Strange that the "nurse" who offered it to him called it a decongestant when he asked her what it was. That was what Roger was going on--what the nurse told him. Kind of scary that the nurse did not even know what the medicine was. Little wonder he didn't take it. I wouldn't have either. Where did she get her nursing degree from? A box of Cracker Jacks?
